Overload. Overwhelm. Exhaustion.
What is burnout?
The term gets thrown around and stretched to apply to many life situations. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines burnout as ‘feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy.”
WHAT TRIGGERS EMOTIONAL STRESS AT WORK?
Working in high-growth companies, the following can come with the territory:
Long hours; aggressive deadlines
Back-to-back meetings starting early/ending late
Navigating corporate politics
Now, these aren’t necessarily triggers for everyone. But for those trying to juggle a high intensity career, the demands of family—all the while de-prioritizing their own wellness - the impact on physical and emotional health can be severe..
MANAGING - COPING - STRUGGLING: IS THIS YOU?
The truth is, burnout is a symptom of a nervous system that has been under stress for too long—an instinctual response of self-protection.
Often, the pressure we’re under is self-inflicted. A few examples that may be familiar:
Getting into a pattern of constant busyness = productivity
Feeling locked into a high-paying job/career as the only option to maintain a lifestyle
Following an old career/life blueprint drawn up in the past that doesn’t quite align anymore
Following someone else’s or society’s idea of ‘successful’
Getting out from under the heavy weight of these issues can be daunting without the right support. I work with clients to tap into the inner knowing, fire and commitment to change we all have within us.
